DORLING, William Stanley

No.12056, Private, William Stanley DORLING
Aged 21

12th Battalion, Royal Fusiliers
Died of his Wounds on Tuesday, 28th March 1916

William Stanley Dorling was born on 4th August 1894 in Culford (school register) (Thingoe Q4-1895 4A:769), son of Jesse Mingay and Elizabeth DORLING (née DORLING).

He was admitted to Culford Voluntary School on 17th January 1898, leaving on 28th February 1907.

1901 census...Aged 6, he was at The Cottages, Culford with his father Jesse DORLING, [33] domestic gardener born West Stow; his mother Elizabeth [38] born North Stow; sisters Lucy [8] and Margaret [2]; brothers George [5] and Walter [3]. All the children were born in Culford.

1911 census...Aged 16, domestic gardening labourer, he was at Culford with his parents; sisters Margaret and Winifred [9]; brothers George and Walter, both garden labourers, and Claude [7]. The new siblings also born in Culford. One sibling, Hilda (1891-1900) had died.

He enlisted in Cockspur St., London, when resident in Dorking. the register of soldier's personal effects records him killed in action which is inconsistent with being buried in Etaples and contrary to "Soldiers Died".

Dying of his wounds in a base hospital means there is no way, given the absence of his service records, of saying exactly where or when he was wounded. His battalion had been in the Ypres Salient the whole of March 1917.
